Where you lead, I will follow...

Life Lessons from the Gilmore Girls
*Life’s short. Talk fast.
*If you can find a town as cool as Stars Hollow to live in, jump at the chance. No where else on earth will you find a troubadour, the Dragonfly Inn, a movie theater inside of a house, fabulous festivals, and a weirdo named Kirk.
*Stay on top of your pop culture. No conversation worth having is without a bit of trivia and pop culture thrown in. It makes you appear cultivated, clever, cool, and well, just way more interesting than, say, having a conversation with Kirk.
*Find a few friends who compliment your strengths and weaknesses and hold on to them for dear life. If one of the friends is Asian and a drummer in a rock band, all the better for you. She becomes your connection to amazing Asian food and hook-ups with cool bands and groupies. If one of the friends is named after a famous city, perhaps you will visit it someday. I suggest finding a best friend named Venice.
*In the world of high fashion, follow Lorelai, NOT Rory. She’s a little bit eclectic, a little bit edgy, even classy when she needs to be, with her own touch of personality thrown into every outfit. Plus, she always wears awesome boots. And Lorelai’s boots are always made for walkin’.
*Never drink to excess, unless you’re drinking Italian Cream Sodas, then you have my permission. If anyone should ever offer to invent a drink in your honor, make sure it’s called the Cassidy. Make sure it’s pink, and make sure it tastes di.vine. Non-alcoholic, of course.
*Whenever you need a problem solved or a party planned, town meetings are the way to go. They promote friendship and sense of community and can always be a source of great humor. Think Taylor. Think Kirk. Think Miss Patty. Think Kirk again.
*Make the best of your education, even if you weren’t able to attend a prep school. And never avoid the chance to be a debutante.
*When life feels as if it can’t get any worse, eat pie. Pie solves almost anything. Broken hearts, questions about college and career choices, broken hearts, insomnia, broken hearts, fashion nightmares, and yes, even broken hearts.
*Contrary to popular belief, junk food is NOT the menu of choice for most life situations. People who eat a steady diet of take-out DO NOT look like Lorelai or Rory Gilmore. You’re better off eating fresh fruits and vegetables from Jackson and Sookie. (Even though they are the ones who look like they eat junk food.) Go figure. Or, plan to lose your figure if you follow the Lorelai-and-Rory diet. Just sayin’.
*If you do ever get a pet of your own, choose its’ name carefully. While Paul Anka is a good name for a dog, he wasn’t the greatest singer on the planet. Perhaps your dog will be named Benton. Or Paul. Or McCartney. Or Jonas. Or Bono. Or….well, you get the picture.
*College is the place to cultivate your love of all things ‘cultural’…art museums, concerts, dining halls, spectacular architecture, and the occasional night out on the town. Word to the wise: watch out for naked men wandering lost. They can turn out to be bad. Or someone else’s boyfriend. Awkward.
*In the area of romance, it’s a general rule that you should stay away from men who like to mime. And perform in giant glass bubbles in trees. And live with their mothers. And that are named Kirk.
*If a boy gives you a car, it can only lead to trouble. (Think Dean and Rory) However, if a man wants to take you for a ride in a convertible and show you a movie on the side of a barn, he might be worth taking a second glance at. Especially if he brings your favorite treats to eat.
*Speaking of men, don’t just sit around waiting for them to say ‘jump’ and then ask ‘how high?’ You’re not that girl. Not even close. Make the men do the jumping for you. Through hoops, if necessary.
*Remember, every girl deserves a bad boy. Just once. Especially if his name is Jess. Then you deserve him twice.
*Sometimes you need to do something crazy and daring, like participate in a 24-hour dance marathon or bungee jump off of a platform. But if the something crazy and daring involves the name “Life and Death Brigade” you should Just. Say. No.
*When you do find that ‘one and only’…which could be more than once, remember to call him Boyfriend. Often. And always.
*Diners are the best places on earth to hang out. Find a favorite and frequent it often. If it includes a man wearing a hat backwards you will be doubly-blessed. Make his acquaintance as soon as possible. This will guarantee a lifetime supply of free pancakes, cheeseburgers, and fries. Skip the coffee. You don’t drink it and you don’t need it.
*Grandparents are worth having dinner with.
*Moms like Lorelai really do know pretty much everything. That’s what makes them cool. That’s what also makes them real only on television. Your real mom is pretty cool. She doesn’t know everything, and she isn’t the snappiest dresser, but she can be fairly witty and clever with a conversation, and she does like pie. Most importantly, she loves you more than fake-tv Lorelai could ever love her Rory. You make her proud every second of every minute of every hour of every day. It’s an honor being your mom. Even if I’m not Lorelai Gilmore.

  1. Like! :) Cassidy is lucky to have you for a mom, even more than Rory is to have Lorelei! Also, real life is way better than theirs. ;)

  4. I sense that this post is for Cassidy, but I'm commenting anyway. Love it. It reminds me of a project Megan C. and I undertook one year in junior high in the midst of our own Gilmore Girl love fest. Instead of Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book, we made Miss Patty's ABZs of Stars Hollow. Because you can find your one and only more than once. And you do deserve it twice.
